Yes, I love pictures. I can’t remember a time that I didn’t love looking at the way companies, magazines, or advertisements visually communicated their story. I can happily spend an afternoon thinking about a company’s chosen style language. Is the newsletter’s or ad’s message getting through? And if not, why? What’s the design difference between J. Crew’s emails and Old Navy’s—and why? These questions excite me because, for me, it’s not just about using a great photo, it’s about telling the story in a way that speaks to your customer. The best designs give a brand’s customer a visceral reaction in the best way. It’s usually that wonderful mix of recognition, excitement, and aspiration.
